Pandreitje (Residential complex)
80 homes on 1 hectare of grounds: these won Pandreitje a well-deserved Belgian architecture Award. Numerous Flemish architects are full of praise for this Bruges pilot project for compact living from 2002. The houses are ranked in a sleek grid pattern of 10 by 10 metres, containing 8 open spaces connected by winding alleys. And every resident has their own little garden or terrace. The site has a long history with, one after the other, the cemetery of a lost Friar Minor cloister, the mediaeval luxury gallery 't Pand, a detention centre and, in the 19th century, an enormous prison. Only the gatehouse and the prison governor's residence remain standing, accounting for another 5 homes.
