Light experience trail

The Light experience trail is 3.2 km long. The trail takes you past 14 impressive light and word installations at well-known and lesser-known locations in the historic city centre.

A temporary footbridge, installed in front of the Stationsplein (Station Square) and accessible via a staircase, allows pedestrians to cross the ring road in the direction of the Lake of Love (Minnewater) and the city centre. For wheelchair users and people with impaired mobility, it is recommended to use the pedestrian crossing on the left and to cross the ring road at the traffic lights a bit further on. Please note that there is no tactile paving on this crossing. For blind or visually impaired persons, it is recommended to take the bus towards the city centre. The nearest accessible bus stop to the light experience trail is 'O.L.V.-Kerk' in the Mariastraat.

Along the route, you can use the easily accessible toilets in the Gruuthuse Museum and at the Lake of Love between 5.00 p.m. and midnight. Moreover, a toilet block is also situated at the Christmas Market on the Market Square. You are also welcome to use the toilets at 't Zand Square and at the train station during opening hours.

Light Installations

All light installations are wheelchair-accessible. Information panels have been placed at the installations at a convenient height.

Winter Bar and the artificial ice rink

The Winter Bar and artificial ice rink on the Lake of Love are wheelchair-accessible. Wheelchair users can use the pontoons, as well as the skating rink.

The Winter Bar takes cash and debit card.

Christmas markets

The Christmas markets at Simon Stevin Square, 't Zand Square and the Market Square are all wheelchair-accessible.

Moreover, a toilet block is also situated at the Christmas Market on the Market Square. On 't Zand Square and in the City Halls, you can use specially-adapted toilets during day-time opening hours.

't Zand Square is covered in large, flat tiles, which makes it easily accessible. There are tactile guiding lines on the square from the De Lijn bus station. These are not always in good condition. The Simon Stevin Square consists of Bruges' signature mosaic cobblestones. These are in good condition. The Market Square is paved with the same typical cobblestones, also in good condition.

Accessibility

Bus

The bus stops at the train station, the Church of Our Lady and the City Theatre are independently accessible for wheelchair users, as well as the blind or visually impaired users. The bus stop at 't Zand Square is wheelchair-accessible. So we can recommend these bus stops.

You can find more information in the route planner of De Lijn.

Parking spaces for people with a disability

There are a number of dedicated, free parking spaces in the city centre for people with a disability. For this, you need a disabled parking permit. You will find an overview in this (Dutch) parking guide on pages 12 to 19. The places are also indicated on handy maps.

More information about accessibility can be found here, including the times when a number of streets are made car-free. Take this into consideration when looking for a parking spot.
