Watertoren (Water tower)

Contrary to what you might expect, the brick tower on the Gentpoortvest is not that old at all. It only made its appearance in 1925, as part of the modern water supply system that Bruges introduced at that time. Despite being 45 metres high and 12 metres thick, the tower's medieval appearance blends seamlessly into the cityscape. But make no mistake, it is packed with technology and to this day provides fresh drinking water to the city centre and Christus-Koning district. The mound and four remarkable concrete shafts also reveal a military secret. The Belgian government had an underground bunker built here in the 1930s, complete with air shafts. Today it is home to a pistol and carbine shooting association.
