Voetgangersbruggen langs Smedenpoort (Footbridges at the Blacksmith's Gate)
Time has not stood still in Bruges, and so it happens that the medieval access roads are not always fit for 21st century traffic. It became clear that the 14th century Smedenpoort (Blacksmith’s Gate) was too narrow for cars, cyclists and pedestrians at peak times. So around the gateway, two modern steel walkways were erected, embracing it but not obscuring its glory. From these pedestrian walkways you have an unobstructed view of the Ramparts and the Blacksmith’s Gate. It’s no surprise that this design won an architecture prize.
