Koninklijke Stadsschouwburg Brugge (Bruges Royal Municipal Theatre)
The Bruges Royal City Theatre (1869) is one of the best-preserved city theatres in Europe. To make room for this regal lady, 46 medieval buildings were razed to the ground, streets were straightened and a new theatre square created. 150 residents lost their homes to the cherished dream of the then bourgeoisie: to have a temple of culture that could stand on equal footing with the large theatre houses of Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. The sober yet majestic neo-Renaissance facade of this royal theatre conceals a palatial foyer and an equally magnificent red and gold auditorium. This outstanding infrastructure is used for performances of contemporary dance and theatre and for concerts of various kinds.
Consult the website of Cultuurcentrum Brugge for scheduled events.
