The Flemish Fish Auction

Vlaamse Visveiling - Sorteerlijn

The Flemish Fish Auction, located at the fishing port of Zeebrugge, is an important link in the journey of the fish caught, before it eventually reaches your plate. The aim is to bring together supply and demand for fresh fish in order to secure the best price for both the buyer and the fisherman. The fish landed is first sorted by species and size. After a quality check and once the boxes have been weighed, the fish is prepared for sale. Three times a week, the fish is sold to buyers from different countries via an online auction system. Auctioning fish is a massive logistical undertaking that involves a lot more than just the auctioning aspect. That is why the Flemish Fish Auction forms part of the European Food Centre, a dynamic cluster with ship owners' workshops, fish processors, suppliers for the vessels, logistics service providers and a freezer and refrigeration unit.
