Bruges cherishes its rich history and is proud of its status as a UNESCO World Heritage City, but the Triennials prove that Bruges is also a centre for contemporary art and architecture. The Bruges Triennial and the Office for Monument Care wanted to demonstrate this to the public, so 20 years after the historic centre of Bruges was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, they published ‘Beeld van de Stad’ (Image of a City). This book invites you to walk through the city, taking in a sophisticated selection of 70 contemporary gems along the way, from Fabre to Permeke and from the Concertgebouw (Concert hall) to the Rijksarchief (State archives), with fascinating information and interesting facts about each building or art work as well as great photographs. There are also ten essays written by experts about modernism in Bruges.
