Blinde-Ezelstraat (Blind Donkey Street)

Above, below, left, right, ahead and behind you: in Blind Donkey Street every square metre has something to notice. From the vaulting between the City Hall and the Civil Registry, to the black square on the side facade of City Hall. This section of wall was purposefully left untouched after cleaning and restoration in the 1970s and demonstrates just how dirty the facade of the City Hall became, due to the traffic that could pass along this narrow street for decades. Today, this is a vital pedestrian and cycling route, because this little street connects two attractions: Burg Square and the Fish Market. There are lots of legends to explain the name of the street, but in fact there was an inn here during the 15th century called Den Blinden Ezel (‘the blind donkey’).
