Bargebrug (Barge Bridge)
Curved lines that pop up in bright red against the green backdrop. When strolling along the City Ramparts, the Bargebrug should not be missed. A striking piece of architecture that hails back to the time when Bruges was Cultural Capital of Europe in 2002. At the time, the City Council wanted to upgrade Kanaaleiland to provide quality access to the city for visitors arriving by bus. The architect designed the bridge and the parking plaza behind it, with its reception facilities, all in one go. Notice how the bridge, plaza, canopy and rest area together make a stylish statement. The parapet starts quite vertical, but it gradually folds open as it approaches the inner city. The striking curve was created to bridge the difference in level between the lower situated Bargeplein and the City Ramparts. Many a visitor crosses the bridge today and ends up in the beautiful Lake of Love Park and nearby Beguinage.
