Adornesdomein (Adornes estate)

The Adornes family, who came from Genoa in Italy, built the estate during the 15th century. They built the Jerusalem Chapel, a number of almshouses and a mansion. The family chapel was consecrated in 1429 and was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. A visit to the Adornes Estate – which is still owned by the family – is a great opportunity to get to know this prominent 15th century Bruges merchant family, in particular Anselm Adornes, who was the most famous descendant of the family. Trade, diplomacy and devotion were central themes of his life. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the elegant, homely atmosphere of the Scottish Lounge.

For the first time ever, after almost 600 years, the monumental tomb of Anselm Adornes and Margaretha van der Banck will be removed from the Jerusalem Chapel. The impressive tomb is in a poor state of repair and requires urgent restoration. Work to dismantle the monument begins in March 2021. In April, the tomb will be transferred to a climate-controlled chamber in Antwerp, where the first step will be to remove the remains of previous restoration. In a following step, new techniques will be applied to restore the entire tomb. In September 2022 (subject to confirmation), the tomb will be reinstalled and on show in the Jerusalem Chapel.
